What macros are, and why count protein, fat, and carbs

Published 2026-07-18 · 5 min read

Calories show 'how much' energy is in your food; macros show 'what it's made of.' Two meals with the same calorie count can affect fullness and how you feel quite differently. Let's look at what's behind this term and why it's worth tracking.

What macros are, and why count protein, fat, and carbs

What 'macros' means

Macros — short for macronutrients — are protein, fat, and carbs, the three main nutrients the body gets energy from. Each has its own calorie count per gram:

  • protein — about 4 kcal per gram;
  • carbs — about 4 kcal per gram;
  • fat — about 9 kcal per gram.

Why look beyond calories

Calorie count is an important number, but not the only one. Protein keeps you full longer and is needed for muscle; fat supports hormone function and vitamin absorption; carbs are the main energy source for the brain and muscles.

So at the same calorie count, a diet with enough protein usually feels more comfortable than one that's 'empty' in composition. Watching your macros helps make your diet balanced, not just calorie-correct.

How Calvero shows your macros

After analyzing a photo, Calvero shows the calories plus three values — protein, fat, carbs — and adds them up over the day in progress rings. You can see how much you've already eaten and how much is left toward your goal for each nutrient.

If the AI got the portion wrong, correct it in text — the composition recalculates automatically.

About targets

Macro ratios are individual and depend on your goals, activity, and health — there's no single 'correct' split for everyone. Calvero helps you see what your diet is made of, but it doesn't replace a consultation with a doctor or dietitian: agree on calorie and macro targets with a specialist if you have a medical condition or other special circumstances.
