How Many Calories in Shawarma: Calorie and Macro Table

Published 2026-07-18 · 4 min read

Shawarma is one of the most common street foods, and everyone watching their diet ends up asking how many calories are in it. There's no single exact number for everyone: calorie count depends heavily on size, the type of meat and the sauce. But we can give you reference points and a calorie and macro table.

How Many Calories in Shawarma: Calorie and Macro Table

How many calories in shawarma per 100 grams

On average, chicken shawarma contains about 200–220 kcal per 100 grams. Pork or lamb versions are noticeably higher in calories — around 230–260 kcal per 100 grams. The main "multiplier" is the sauce: a generous mayonnaise or garlic sauce can easily add 100–200 kcal to a portion.

These are reference points, not exact figures: every vendor has their own recipe, size and amount of sauce, so the actual calorie count of your shawarma may differ noticeably.

Shawarma calorie and macro table (approximate)

Approximate values for a classic chicken shawarma in lavash, with an average amount of sauce:

  • per 100 g: ≈210 kcal, protein ≈11 g, fat ≈11 g, carbs ≈17 g;
  • small shawarma, 250 g: ≈500–550 kcal;
  • standard shawarma, 300–350 g: ≈600–750 kcal;
  • large shawarma, 400–500 g: ≈850–1100 kcal;
  • the same portion made with pork is roughly 10–20% higher in calories.

What determines the calorie count

The main factors that push the number up or down:

  • the meat and its fat content — chicken is lighter than pork or lamb;
  • the sauce — mayonnaise and garlic sauces are the most calorie-dense, while ketchup and unsweetened yogurt sauce are lighter;
  • the size and amount of lavash — a large shawarma in double lavash is higher in calories;
  • add-ins — cheese, fries inside, double meat noticeably raise the calorie count;
  • vegetables — cabbage, carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes add volume and fullness with almost no calories.

How to make shawarma lighter

If you want to cut the calorie count, a few simple choices help: pick chicken over pork, ask for less sauce or a yogurt-based sauce instead of mayonnaise, add more vegetables, and skip extras like cheese and fries.

Homemade shawarma is almost always lighter than street shawarma: you control the amount of sauce and the fat content of the meat yourself, and you can use thin lavash.

How to calculate your own shawarma

Since everyone's size and recipe are different, the most accurate numbers come from your specific portion. Take a photo of your shawarma in Calvero: the service will estimate the calories and macros from the picture, and if something's off about the size or ingredients, just correct it with text ("on pork", "no sauce", "large") and the calculation will be redone.
